PRISM international publishes exciting, original, literary material from established and emerging writers in Canada and around the world. We accept submissions year-round. Due to the high volume of submissions we receive each month, reply times range between 2 to 6 months, depending on the time of year.

A good deal of our content is generated from our annual Fiction, Poetry and Creative Non-Fiction Contests. Please visit our contest page for more details.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Please submit to only one genre at a time, and await a reply before submitting again. See the particular guidelines for each genre below.

Guidelines for Prose (Short Fiction, Literary Non-Fiction, Drama)

  • Please submit only one piece at a time, unless you are submitting flash fiction or non-fiction (under 1000 words), in which case you can submit up to three pieces in a single document. While we accept submissions of up to 25 pages (6,250 words), it is generally easier to place shorter work. If you’re going to write long, it should really blow our socks off.
  • Include in your cover letter your full contact information (including email address) and a short bio. Please also specify the genre you are submitting.
  • Submissions should be typed, double-spaced, and paginated. No wacky fonts, please.
  • Non-fiction pieces should be creative, exploratory, or experimental in tone. We do not publish rhetorical, academic, or journalistic non-fiction.
  • We welcome translations into English. Such works must be undertaken with the permission of the original author. Please include a copy of the original work with your submission.
  • We strongly prefer online submissions, and to reply to mailed submissions via email. Please only include a SASE if you cannot be reached via email. And remember: we’re in Canada – unless you are too, your stamps don’t work here.
  • We do not accept email submissions. Online submissions must be submitted through Submittable, and come with a $3 submission fee.
  • We do not return manuscripts. Please ensure that you retain a copy of your submission for your files.
  • Please send only one submission per three-month period.
  • We accept simultaneous submissions, but if your piece is accepted elsewhere please let us know immediately.
  • Submissions must be previously unpublished, in print and online.
  • We purchase first North American serial rights, and pay $30/printed page for prose. Contributors will receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears.

Guidelines for Cover Art

An image of the cover will also appear on our website, the British Columbia Association of Magazine Publishers website, and the affiliated websites of Magazines Canada.
  • Please send photography submissions to Jen Macdonald, Executive Editor, Circulation at circulation@prismmagazine.ca.

Reasonable exceptions to our guidelines will be made for submissions from
writers in prison.

Please note: PRISM does not accept submissions from current and incoming
students and faculty of the University of British Columbia’s Creative Writing
Program (this includes the UBC Optional-Residency MFA Program). Work submitted by incoming students prior to their acceptance to the UBC Creative Writing Program, if still under consideration, must be withdrawn. In order to submit, UBC alumni cannot have taken a UBC Creative Writing Program course during the previous two years.

Please note that it is also our policy not to publish the same writer more than once within a twelve-month period.
